{"id":3519,"date":"2013-09-09T14:16:53","date_gmt":"2013-09-09T13:16:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/verityholloway.com\/?p=3519"},"modified":"2013-09-12T21:00:34","modified_gmt":"2013-09-12T20:00:34","slug":"wend-it-like-william-morris-pilgrimage-with-curiocity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/verityholloway.com\/?p=3519","title":{"rendered":"Wend It Like William &#8211; The Morris Pilgrimage with Curiocity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-3742\" alt=\"MorrisBJChaucer2\" src=\"http:\/\/verityholloway.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/MorrisBJChaucer2-218x300.jpg\" width=\"196\" height=\"270\" srcset=\"https:\/\/verityholloway.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/MorrisBJChaucer2-218x300.jpg 218w, https:\/\/verityholloway.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/MorrisBJChaucer2.jpg 435w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 196px) 100vw, 196px\" \/>Whilst fully admitting it feels as if I left both my legs somewhere in Greenwich, this\u00a0weekend&#8217;s Curiocity Pre-Raphaelite Pilgrimage was a great (and <em>exhausting<\/em>, oh good God, exhausting) way to spend a Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Beginning at Southwark at <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_George_Inn,_Southwark\">The George Inn<\/a>, an original coaching inn close to the site where Chaucer&#8217;s Canterbury pilgrims would have set off, we embarked on a thirteen mile trek to William Morris&#8217; Red House in Bexleyheath, an &#8216;escape from the city&#8217; taking in the green spaces and lesser-travelled highways of the London Morris would have known.<\/p>\n<p>Coffee in hand, we were packed off with a\u00a0retelling of The Wife of Bath and the encouragement to tell stories and mingle along the way.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">In th&#8217; olde dayes of the Kyng Arthour,<br \/>\nOf which that Britons speken greet honour,<br \/>\nAl was this land fulfild of fayerye.<br \/>\nThe elf-queene, with hir joly compaignye,<br \/>\nDaunced ful ofte in many a grene mede.<br \/>\nThis was the olde opinion, as I rede;<br \/>\nI speke of manye hundred yeres ago.<br \/>\nBut now kan no man se none elves mo<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_3621\" style=\"width: 424px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3621\" class=\" wp-image-3621  \" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/verityholloway.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/P1030976.jpg\" width=\"414\" height=\"311\" srcset=\"https:\/\/verityholloway.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/P1030976.jpg 4000w, https:\/\/verityholloway.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/P1030976-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/verityholloway.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/P1030976-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/verityholloway.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/P1030976-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 414px) 100vw, 414px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-3621\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Pilgrim&#8217;s Passport<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We wended our way across the city, thanks to chips and cider, a lot of laughter, and some wonderful sights on the way: the grave of Christopher Marlowe in Deptford (topped with a fresh-cut red rose), storytelling in the Queen&#8217;s Orchard following a sudden rainstorm, and\u00a0seeing the brown guts of the Thames bared at low tide, where the mudlarks and toshers would once have rooted for valuables &#8211; the modernity Morris sought to flee, and the history that made up the landscape of his imagination.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">(This got me thinking. An equivalent Rossetti pilgrimage might involve a nocturnal wander through Chelsea, the ransacking of a Whitechapel antique shop, and a good cry on the floor. Another Saturday, perhaps.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Back at Red House in time for folk music and a further dose of cider, we had our polaroids taken by the front door as proof of survival.\u00a0Yes, we all brought wombats. We are serious scholars.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-3659\" alt=\"prbpolaroid2\" src=\"http:\/\/verityholloway.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/prbpolaroid2.jpg\" width=\"311\" height=\"414\" srcset=\"https:\/\/verityholloway.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/prbpolaroid2.jpg 3000w, https:\/\/verityholloway.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/prbpolaroid2-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/verityholloway.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/prbpolaroid2-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 311px) 100vw, 311px\" \/> At the same time, across London, 300 people were arrested at an EDL rally. We were reminded that for every person generating cruelty and ugliness there is more than one devoted to beauty and equality.<\/p>\n<header>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;All we true people must make up our minds &#8211; if we don\u2019t see &#8211; to feel each other &#8211; &amp; never let go. Else the wicked ones will have it all their way.&#8221; &#8211;\u00a0John Ruskin<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/header>\n<p>Seeing those <a href=\"http:\/\/verityholloway.com\/?p=3525\">newly-uncovered murals<\/a> for the first time was as exciting as we knew it would be. There&#8217;s what could well be Morris&#8217; first repeating floral pattern, as well as two wombats (verified by John Simon, author of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/gp\/product\/1904750605\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1634&amp;creative=6738&amp;creativeASIN=1904750605&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=ratwingle-21\">Rossetti&#8217;s Wombat<\/a>\u00a0and world authority on\u00a0that most noble of marsupials)\u00a0snuggled up at a wedding feast. To think, someone covered it all in white emulsion on purpose.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am too blind and sick to know what I am about,&#8221; wrote Lizzie Siddal, working on <em>something<\/em> within the house.
